Monthly design roundup for February 2023.
Hi there! I guess it's time for that monthly newsletter I said I was going to start doing. If you're receiving this, thanks for signing up! Here I'll be covering designs I've made that you might've missed, along with some music I’ve been listening to, movies I’ve watched, inspo I’ve found, and anything else I might want to put here.
Social media is constantly changing (destroying) their algorithms — I’ve had a few of you at this point reach out and tell me that my posts no longer make it to your feed. With this much uncertainty floating around these platforms, I thought it would be best to start building up an e-mail community where I can send you my work & thoughts directly. I’m not particularly great at writing, so I hope this is a safe space for me to just word vomit to you in an informal way…
DESIGN
This month I had the privilege of working on another acid house/rave flyer for faves Sextile, a tour poster for Shannon & The Clams, and a co-headline tour poster for My Morning Jacket & Fleet Foxes.
Also had my first Fonts In Use feature!
I actually started this in January, but I got back into Cyanotype/Solar printing, this time on garments. Alternative photo processes was something I experimented with in college, I took a class about creating Cyanotypes and Van Dyke Brown prints and even created several art books I still have now. This time I was going to try printing on a button up using film photos my partner & I took when we visited the PNW/San Francisco last year.
I used this starter kit from Jacquard called SolarFast, and an old 12”x18” frame as my baseboard with the plexiglass as my screen. The transparent film that was provided is used to print an inverted grayscale image using an inkjet printer. Seeing as you get the best prints in direct/bright sunlight, the results of this project were based entirely on what I could accomplish on my fire escape or in my room on overcast days, between 12PM-4PM. I worked on this garment for two weeks, planning my exposures based on the weather. The sun moves quickly, so as I was rushing to make these exposures the light traveled across my room, meaning I was moving my garment every 20 minutes to make sure it was getting as much direct sunlight as possible. The time range for these exposures was anywhere from 10-40 minutes. Results varied, especially since after every exposure I was running to my sink to wash/blow dry to prepare for the next exposure with what little sunlight I had left.

MOVIES
I’m an avid movie-goer and watcher, most weekends you can either find me at a theater or rewatching old favorites at home. Here are some highlights from this month:
The Before Trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight) ☆☆☆☆☆
First time watch and completely destroyed me, haven’t stopped thinking about it for days. I’m still thinking about it today! Richard Linklater you sick man.
Aftersun ☆☆☆☆
Finally got around to watching this one — need a rewatch so I can pick apart all of the small details that went into this. Looked gorgeous
The Wailing ☆☆☆☆
Not a single thing could’ve prepared me for how grotesque and twisted this one was. It was in my queue for a while, and even while watching it I never truly felt like I had answers or knew where it was going.
The Holy Mountain ☆☆☆
Possibly the most visceral and weird movie I’ve ever seen in my life. Visually stunning, Wes Anderson I know you’re taking notes.
Other watches from Letterboxd:
The Village (rewatch) ☆☆
The Crow (rewatch) ☆☆☆☆
How I Live Now ☆☆
Stalker ☆☆
Juno (rewatch) ☆☆☆☆
Romeo + Juliet ☆☆☆
Election ☆☆☆
